easyJet plan UK jobs / flights cuts
03.09.09
easyJet announced plans today to move some of its aircraft from the UK to more profitable bases on the continent. The budget airline said flights from Luton Airport would be cut by up to 20%, it plans to close its base in the East Midlands and will cut staff at Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted airports.
The airline said it would consult on a reduction of the number of flight crews at Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted, and that it plans to close its base at East Midlands airport. At Luton a row over landing charges will see easyJet cut flights by up to 20%, and relocate the aircraft released by the move to profitable bases in Europe.
A spokesman for the airline said: ‘We are deeply disappointed that [Spanish operator] Abertis and Luton Borough Council have not taken a more far-sighted approach that would have protected jobs.' easyJet currently employs 530 pilots and cabin crew at Luton, its home and operational base.
The spokesman added: ‘At East Midlands, we cannot see long term growth and have decided to move our assets to markets with better long term potential.' easyJet employs 120 staff at East Midlands Airport.
A consultation on crew numbers at Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted affects about 40 staff, the spokesman said.
