Immigration computer glitch hits passengers
07.10.08
A problem with the new computer system for screening all EU passports and those from other countries with a machine readable strip caused delays for around 1000 passengers at Luton Airport yesterday, the Telegraph reports.
Using the system, passports are read automatically by being passed underneath a scanner, a process that normally takes around seven seconds. However the computer system crashed yesterday, meaning officers from the Border and Immigration Agency had to enter the information manually. This trebled the time needed to process passengers, leading to lengthy queues.
The glitch was cleared late yesterday, enabling the immigration service to work normally.
