New airport Masterplan includes big expansion
07.10.11
Luton Borough Council hopes the number of people using Luton Airport will double by the end of the decade, The Comet reports. The council is the main shareholder of the company that owns the airport, which is leased to airport operator Albertis, and is considering its future as part of an update of its long term 'Materplan'.
At an Executive meeting this week, council leaders said they expect an increase in the annual passengers to 18 million by 2020 - almost double the current number - with up to 30 million passengers expected by 2030.
The new Masterplan, required by the Government as part of its national planning process, would mean development to the land to the east of Luton, which is within the North Herts boundary. North Herts District Council councillor David Barnard told the newspaper the plans would have serious implications for people in North Herts.
