easyJet confirm 20% flight cuts
07.12.09
easyJet has confirmed that it will close its East Midlands Airport base and reduce capacity by 20% Luton Airport. The low-cost airline confirmed that, after a statutory 90-day consultation with staff, it will cease operations at East Midlands and cut capacity at its home hub by 20%.
On January 5, the airline will stop all flights from East Midlands Airport. And although the number of aircraft at Luton Airport will remain at 16, departing passenger volumes will fall to 1.9 million - down from 2.6 million in 2008 - after a row over with the airport's operator over charges.
easyJet says there will be no compulsory redundancies. The capacity reduction at Luton Airport means the airline will no longer operate flights to Athens, Cagliari and Vienna, and will reduce frequencies on routes including Alicante, Dortmund, Edinburgh, Geneva, Glasgow, Nice and Paris.
