Sabre says some budget airlines no longer low cost

easyJet, bmibaby and a number of other budget carriers should no longer be considered as low-cost airlines, the Times reports Sabre Airline Solutions has said. A survey of 540 airlines by the travel technology provider revealed that of the 123 which said they were low-cost operators, more than half offered services which were more in keeping with traditional airlines, such as code sharing and multiple classes of service.
Murray Smyth, vice president of Sabre, told the newspaper: ‘The low cost segment is one of the most competitive in the airline industry. This has spurred many budget airlines to explore ways of evolving their business to remain competitive and sustainable.'
'For some , this has meant adopting some full-service airline business practices to help grow their passenger base and expand their reach in the marketplace, although they have often added their own twist on how these practices are implemented.’
Sabre says that the airlines adopting these practices should be considered as hybrid rather than low-cost airlines. It includes easyJet, Germanwings and bmibaby in this category.
