Funding confirmed for guided busway
12.03.10
Funding has been confirmed for the guided busway that will cover 12km and stretch from Houghton Regis to Luton Airport, it was announced yesterday. The service will be provided by specially adapted buses capable of run on the tracks and also on public roads, with around 8km of the route a guided busway.
The busway will provide a fast link between the town centres of Luton, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Luton Airport Parkway station and Luton Airport. When completed, this scheme will ease congestion and encourage greater use of public transport.
Up to £80m of the almost £100m required to fund the scheme will be provided by the Department for Transport, with the remaining funding being provided by local authorities and private investors. Following additional detailed design work, the main construction of the busway is due to start in December with completion scheduled for April 2012.
