easyJet accused of disability discrimination

easyJet has been accused of discriminating against disabled people after it refused to allow three French passengers in wheelchairs on flights, a French prosecutor said. Prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini, who is seeking a fine of more than £50,000 against the budget airline in a French court, said easyJet operates ‘a commercial policy which consists of squeezing running costs to the maximum and, if a discriminatory policy is necessary for that, too bad,’ Radio France International reported over the weekend.
The three passengers, who were all traveling alone, were not allowed on planes in 2008 and 2009. easyJet said it was following European and British rules in not allowing the passengers on the flights. A spokesman said: ‘Handicapped passengers [travelling alone] must be able to put on oxygen masks and life belts and fasten and unfasten seat belts, understand emergency instructions and leave the plane unassisted.'
