easyJet ancillary revenue row reaches court
14.06.10
The row between Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou and easyJet, the budget airline he founded, is set to land at the high court this week. Sir Stelios believes the airline has breached the terms of a licensing agreement for the easyJet name set up when the airline listed on the stockmarket. This limits easyJet to making not more than 25% of its revenue from ancillary sources.
The row is over whether the budget airline's core activity of selling seats on its planes should include other activities such as fees paid to check in bags, on-board sales of food and extras such as airport parking and hotel rooms. Sir Stelios currently leases the easyJet name to the airline for £1 a year, but receives a share of the ancillary revenue. He is reported to be seeking £3m plus for the continued use of the easyJet name.
