easyJet offer crew unpaid leave
15.09.09
easyJet is to offer its pilots and cabin crew unpaid leave this winter as part of a drive to save £125m a year by September 2011, according to documents on its website. The budget airline wants to save £30m a year by upgrading IT systems to help roster staff more efficiently, and by offering unpaid leave. It will also hire new crew on fixed-term and seasonal contracts rather than offering permanent jobs.
A spokesman for easyJet said that the temporary contract initiative had already been in place for the past two summers to help deal with its peak travel period. Unpaid leave is being offered over the winter season, when demand is traditionally weak. In previous winters staff have been offered unpaid leave of between 2 weeks and 6 months, but they will not be forced to take unpaid leave, the spokesman added.
