Luton airport had a record 10.2 million passengers pass through its terminal in 2008, up 2.5% on a year earlier. The airport said that it was ‘unique among the major London airports in reporting passenger growth in 2008’.
During 2008 13 new routes were launched, with new destinations in France, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Romania popular along with the UK's first low cost flights to the Ukraine. Airport marketing director, Natalie Raper, said: ‘The figures show a continuing trend for passengers to choose London Luton Airport in the highly competitive South East UK market.'
For 2009 Luton has already announced more new routes, including flights to Lvov in the Ukraine, Prague and Jersey. With the airline focused on cheap flights, in the current economic climate it should continue to out perform its London rivals.
