easyJet to run 86% of flights after disruption cost over £40m
21.04.10
easyJet said yesterday that the flight disruption from the volcanic ash cloud had cost it £40m, with losses running at around £5m per day. However, as airports in the UK and Europe opened today, the airline said that it would operate 86% of its scheduled services.
easyJet said yesterday it was forced to cancel 4500 flights over the first 5 days of the disruption, or around 85% of its schedule. This hit the travel plans of over 200,000 people. However, following the re-opening of airspace across the UK and Europe, it plans to operate 900 flights or 86% of its network today, but warned it will take several days to resume normal operations.
The airline told the City its results for the financial year to the end of March were at the top end of its previously reported expectations. A spokesman said trading was looking robust, or at least it was before the volcano erupted !
