Airports expensive for foreign exchange

Research published by the Times has found that Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford and Luton Airport are some of the worst places for holidaymakers to buy foreign currency. It says that holidaymakers should steer clear of foreign exchange bureaus at UK airports, which provide the least competitive currency conversion rates.

Airports are one of the most expensive places to buy currency. It costs an average £6,434 to buy €7,500 at a UK airport currency exchange, the research found. The same amount would cost £6,136 if you took it out using a debit card and £6,181 if you ordered the currency from a specialist online foreign exchange provider such as Onlinefx.
Some airports are worse than others - even with the same currency company - because rates vary, the newspaper reports. Buying the €7,500 at an ICE bureau de change at Luton Airport would have set you back £6,608, for example. However, if you bought from an ICE bureau at Gatwick you would be charged only £6,257 – a saving of £351.
