Airport and easyJet in dispute
22.08.09
Negotiations between easyJet and Luton Airport over next year's landing fees have reached an impasse that could threaten the size of the airline’s presence at its home base, TTG reports. easyJet, the largest airline at Luton, is refusing to pay higher landing charges proposed by the airport and considering moving aircraft to Stansted and Gatwick. It already flies more passengers from Gatwick than from Luton, after its acquisition of GB Airways.
easyJet started at Luton and still regards it as its ‘spiritual home’, with much of its admin in a giant 'easyLand' hanger next to the airport. However, it has been at odds with the airport over several issues recently, including a £1 drop-off charge at the short term car park introduced this year, as well as a planned increase in landing fees.
TTG quotes 'sources close to the negotiations' saying that airport charges already make up about 10% of the airline's average fare from Luton. The increase would force it to raise ticket prices, and it is suggested that, if easyJet does not get the deal it wants, the airline will drop plans to expand at Luton and move two of its eight aircraft based there to other London airports.
