Two Lithuanians who swallowed 100 packets of cocaine between then in a desperate bid to smuggle 1 kg of the drug in to the UK via Luton Airport were jailed last week. Kestutis Jankauskis, 26, and Mantas Ramonas, 20, were stopped by Border Agency officers when they arrived at Luton on a flight from Madrid shortly after midnight on November 11 last year.
The men told customs officers they were visiting Ramonas’ sister, who they said was living in the UK, but were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking when they could not supply her address. They were taken to Luton & Dunstable Hospital where X-rays revealed the contents of their stomachs. They had tried to evade detection by swallowing the drugs worth over £40,000 in 100 individual packages.
Mr Jankauskis and Mr Ramonas were sentenced to four and- a half years and three years respectively at Isleworth Crown Court after they pleaded guilty to drug smuggling charges.
