easyJet announce new CEO
24.03.10
easyJet said today that Carolyn McCall is to become its new CEO. Ms McCall, forty eight, will succeed Andy Harrison and joins the airline from Guardian Media Group, the publisher of The Guardian and The Observer newspapers, where she has been chief executive since 2006. The actual date of her appointment at easyJet has not been announced.
The appointment completes a round of changes in the carrier's senior management after a very public spat between the board and founder and major shareholder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over its growth strategy during the current recession. Sir Michael Rake, chairman of BT, took over as chairman on January 1, after the departure of Sir Colin Chandler. In January, the airline announced that EMI executive Chris Kennedy would become chief financial officer. He replaces interim CFO Mark Adams, who filled the position after Jeff Carr resigned in May.
Chairman Michael Rake said: ‘Following a thorough process involving a number of high calibre candidates we have unanimously chosen a strong chief executive with the strategic ability, operational capability and passion to drive easyJet through the next stage of its development.'
