easyJet revenues up; expects profit
29.07.09
easyJet reported sales up 12% to £721m in the quarter April - June, as non-UK holidaymakers taking advantage of the strong euro left it ‘resilient’ in the global downturn. Rival airlines cutting capacity helped it increase passenger numbers by 2.9% to 11.9m and its load factor increased by 1.2 percentage points to 84.7%.
Revenue from extra charges - including checked-in baggage and in-flight food - jumped 34% during the 3 month period. However, tough economic conditions meant it expects a profit of between £25m and £50m this year, making it 'one of the few profitable airlines this year.'
A spokesman said easyJet attracted more business travellers, who switched from full-service airlines such as BA to save money. Its market share increased particularly at Gatwick and in Milan, Paris and Madrid. easyJet plans to have nearly 200 aircraft by September 2011, up from 177 at end of June this year, in line with growth plans set out in May.
