YouGov poll slams APD changes
29.10.09
A YouGov poll carried out on behalf of easyJet suggests that 69 percent of Britons want Air Passenger Duty (APD) changed to be more environmentally friendly, and 80 percent believe all flights should be taxed. Currently private jets, cargo aircraft and foreign passengers changing planes in the UK are exempt from the tax, whilst long haul passengers are currently under taxed, according to the budget airline.
The poll was carried ahead of an increase in APD on 1 November. easyJet said the current rules were ‘perverse’ as they hit ordinary British families hardest and do nothing to help the environment. The budget airline said that the rules mean full planes travelling to Europe are taxed more than half-empty planes on long-haul flights, which do more damage to the environment per passenger.
Andy Harrison, Chief Executive of easyJet, said, ‘APD is a daft tax that the Government promised to reform. It broke its promise and increased the tax burden on the average British family instead. People don’t understand why their tax is going up again while fat cats on private jets, cargo planes and foreign transfer passengers don’t pay any tax at all. How can the Government justify a tax break for 20 million foreign passengers while charging a British family of four £44 to go to Europe?'
