easyJet could launch ash lawsuit

easyJet could bring a class action lawsuit to seek compensation for flight bans imposed by Europe’s air safety authorities over the last two months. Andy Harrison, the airline's outgoing chief executive, said in an interview with the German Wirstschaftswoche magazine that easyJet is talking to other carriers about a joint legal action.
The five-day closure of European airspace, and six-and-a-half day closure of UK airspace, after the volcano in Iceland erupted cost the airline between £50m - £75m. Mr Harrison said: ‘We are working on [a possible legal claim] with a group of other companies, including those outside the budget sector. It was a natural catastrophe and there is no reason why the consequences must be borne by the airlines alone, particularly when it has become apparent afterwards that a closure of that size was unnecessary.’
An easyJet spokesman told the Times that the airline believes it could make a good case for compensation. He said: ‘We are still talking to the Government about it but it is also quite natural for us to look into the legal avenues of redress.'
